Best time to visit Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe Forest National Park is a protected rainforest located in the southwestern part of Rwanda, along the border with Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It covers an area of 970 square kilometers and is the largest mountain rainforest in East and Central Africa. The forest is home to a wide range of wildlife, including over 300 bird species, 13 primate species, and more than 85 mammal species. Some of the notable primates found in the forest include chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, and L'Hoest's monkeys.

The best time to visit Nyungwe Forest National Park is during the dry season, which runs from June to September and December to February. During this period, the trails are drier and easier to hike, making it easier to spot the wildlife. Additionally, the views are much clearer, and there is less rainfall, making it a more enjoyable experience.

Visitors can take part in various activities in the park, including chimpanzee trekking, colobus monkey trekking, birdwatching, and forest walks. The chimpanzee trekking experience involves hiking through the forest with an experienced guide to observe and learn about the behavior of the chimpanzees. The colobus monkey trekking experience offers an opportunity to see the black-and-white colobus monkeys that inhabit the forest. The forest walks allow visitors to explore the park's beautiful landscapes, waterfalls, and birdlife.

Nyungwe Forest National Park is also home to several lodges that offer comfortable accommodation for visitors. Some of the lodges are located near the park, while others are within the park. Visitors can also take part in cultural tours to nearby villages to learn about the local culture and way of life.

It is important to note that due to the park's high altitude, the weather can be unpredictable and change rapidly. Therefore, visitors should pack warm clothing and rain gear regardless of the time of year. Additionally, visitors are required to obtain permits to participate in activities such as chimpanzee and colobus monkey trekking.
