SafariBando / Safari & Tours / 5 days Katavi National Park Tanzania Safari / Details

Experience the African safari to the remote and untamed Katavi national park. This park is among the few park which is still untouched and an unexplored wilderness area isolated from the human settlements. It is one of Africa’s vast wilderness that is concentrated with diverse game animals which have not encountered anywhere on the continent!

Katavi National Park Safari is ideal during the dry season where roads to the park are accessible. Also on dry season game viewing is possible since animals tend to cram in the remaining pools of Katuma River which is the only remaining source of water which offer visitor amazing wildlife viewing.  An incredibly small number of people who visit this park plays a big part in the provision of maximum privacy during game viewing

This park boasts a huge number of wild animals with an estimated 1,000 buffaloes, 4,000 elephants which can be can in small to large herds. Other animals in Katavi national park are lions, hyenas, wild dogs, giraffes, zebra, impala, and reedbuck.

Day 3: Full day in Katavi National Park

8:00 am – Full day Game Drive with picnic lunch at Katavi National Park. Tanzania’s third largest national park, it lies in the remote southwest of the country, within a truncated arm of the Rift Valley that terminates in the shallow, brooding expanse of Lake Rukwa.

The bulk of Katavi supports a hypnotically featureless cover of tangled brachystegia woodland, home to substantial but elusive populations of the localized eland, sable and roan antelopes. But the main focus for game viewing within the park is the Katuma River and associated floodplains such as the seasonal Lakes Katavi and Chada. During the rainy season, these lush, marshy lakes are a haven for myriad water birds, and they also support Tanzania’s densest concentrations of hippo and crocodile.

It is during the dry season, when the floodwaters retreat, that Katavi truly comes into its own. The Katuma, reduced to a shallow, muddy trickle, forms the only source of drinking water for miles around, and the flanking floodplains support game concentrations that defy belief. An estimated 4,000 elephants might converge on the area, together with several herds of 1,000-plus buffalo, while an abundance of giraffe, zebra, impala and reedbuck provide easy pickings for the numerous lion prides and spotted hyena clans whose territories converge on the floodplains.
