SafariBando / Safari & Tours / 2-Day Chimpanzee Tracking in Gombe National Park / Details
Chimpanzees, the closest relatives to humankind, are more than 98% genetically, are so rare and on verge to extinction. In Tanzania, these primates' wild populations are limited to Gombe Stream, Mahale Mountains and Rubondo Island national parks. This 3-day tour will take visitors to a face to face encounter with these relatives of humans. In addition, clients will physically visit and get information from the Jane Goodall research centre in Gombe National Park, the oldest of its kind
Day 1: Chimpanzee Tracking in Gombe Stream
The guide picks you up from Kigoma Airport or your hotel in Kigoma and transfers you to Kibirizi port where a private boat awaits to ferry you to Kasekela entrance, the entry point to Gombe Stream National Park. After park entry formalities, you will check-in in the accommodation, relax on the shores of Lake Tanganyika as you wait for your lunch.
After midday lunch, you will start the first trek in search for chimpanzees in Gombe mountains. The distance to be covered depends on location of the primates families on that specific day. On encountering the troop, you will observe the instructions of the ranger accompanying you. Other primate species such as monkeys and baboons are also abundant this national park.
Meals and overnights at Kasekela mid-range tented camp or Gombe forest lodge
Day 2: Chimpanzee and other primates Tracking in Gombe Stream
An early breakfast will be served at Gombe Bandas before undertaking a second Chimpanzee tracking across the valley of Gombe mountains. As per the laws established, you will spend a maximum of one hour with the chimpanzee per day and a distance of not closer than 10 meters. Because of Chimpanzees' closeness to humans, they can easily contaminate diseases from human beings, especially airborne diseases.
Depending on your interest, you will then proceed with the search across the mountains. Primates, dense forest animals such as wild pigs, and diverse bird species will be encountered. You can also challenge yourselves to trek to Jane Goodall's peak.
Returning to the lodge for lunch and then visiting Jane Goodall's research center to get further information from the scientists about the life of interesting primates.
The private boat will then drive you back to Kigoma Airport or your lodge in Kigoma town.
